Beginning Reading Readiness
Program Overview:
The Beginning Reading Readiness program is designed specifically for children ages 4 to 6 who are just starting their reading journey. It introduces the fundamental skills needed for successful reading and writing and provides the essential building blocks for literacy.
Through engaging, age-appropriate activities and research-based strategies rooted in the Science of Reading, we help children:
- Name letters and tell their corresponding sounds.
- Manipulate sounds in words to develop phonemic awareness skills.
- Build early confidence and a love for learning.
- Build accuracy and automaticity needed for becoming a successful early reader.
Our instruction is personalized to each child’s unique needs, ensuring they feel supported and encouraged every step of the way.
What Will Your Child Learn?
- Phonological Awareness:
- How sounds work in words.
- To successfully participate in Activities that focus on word segmentation, syllable work, isolation of sounds, and identifying initial, middle, and ending sounds in words.
- Letter Recognition and Letter-Sound Correspondence:
- To name both uppercase and lowercase letters accurately and efficiently.
- The Connection of letters with their corresponding sounds to build decoding (reading) and encoding (writing) skills.
- Sound Blending and Word Building:
- How to blend individual sounds to form words.
- How to break simple words into their components to build decoding and spelling skills.
- Pre-Reading and Early Reading Confidence:
- Strengthening pre-reading skills that set the stage for fluency.
- To have a curiosity about books and the written word through fun and interactive activities.
How Does the Program Work?
Initial Assessment
Each child begins with a thorough assessment to evaluate his/her skills in letter recognition, and sounds, sound awareness, and word segmentation. We will also check knowledge of high frequency words. The results of this assessment help us tailor the program to your childs’ specific needs.
Personalized Instruction
Sessions are explicitly structured to ensure every child progresses at his/her own pace. We make learning fun and effective using multisensory techniques, hands-on activities, and engaging games.
Small Goals, Big Wins
Focusing on achievable milestones, we help children build confidence and celebrate their progress toward independent reading readiness. We will monitor the child’s progress regularly and share that information with you.
Flexible Learning Options
Depending on your family’s needs, we offer sessions in person at your home, the public library, our Hampstead location or virtually via Zoom.
